Jamestown S'Klallam Tribal Council, Past and Present

Two Strong Women of Tribal Council

The strong women of Tribal Council in the late 1970s and early 1980s were Edith Cusack and Harriette Adams.

They worked tirelessly to connect the Tribe to regional and national organizations, obtaining grants for health and educational programs, and compiling much of the information required to prove the Tribe’s legal case for federal recognition.

Edith Cusack (Johnson family, daughter of former Tribal Council Chair Wilson Johnson), served the Tribe from 1970-1984, on Council (as Vice-Chair from 1970-1977 and 1982-1984). As the Tribe’s first Business Manager, Cusack, along with several other members of the Jamestown Tribe, represented the Tribe on the Neah Bay Health Board, Governor Evans’ Indian Advisory Board, Small Tribes of Western Washington, the Sequim Education Program, Western Washington Indian Education and Training Program, Associated Tribes of Northwest Indians and the National Congress of American Indians.

Harriette Hall Adams
(Hall-Adams family, daughter of former Tribal Council Chair Jake Hall) who had attended Tribal Council meetings from the time her father Jacob “Jake” Hall was Chair in the 1940s, served as Tribal Council Chair from 1975-1977, and continued on Council from 1981-1988, much of that time as Secretary. During her term, the Tribe’s Constitution and Bylaws were approved for submittal to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
