The Constitution and Bylaws approved in November 1975 were submitted to the federal government with the Tribe’s 1976 Petition for Federal Recognition. The recognition process was amended in 1978, so the petition had to be rewritten and Amended Petition was resubmitted in 1979.

The new Bylaws called for elections to be held in mid-October, with the new Council members being seated immediately, and with each term lasting two

In 1975, the name of the Tribe was changed from Jamestown Band of Clallam Indians to Jamestown Clallam Tribe. In 1977, the spelling was changed to Klallam. Tribal Council approved the final change to S’Klallam, as spelled in the Treaty of Point No Point, at the February 20, 1999 meeting.

The name S'Klallam is the phonetically-spelled version of the original word
